Shifting Our Focus

“Life seems sometimes like nothing more than a series of losses, from beginning to end. That’s the given. How you respond to those losses, what you make of what’s left, that’s the part you have to make up as you go.”

– Katherine Weber

I came across this quote today and it hit me like a slap in the face. I wasn’t searching for quotes; it was just there like it was meant for me to read. I really started to think about my life, my thoughts, and my attitude towards certain things. For the last number of years (too many years to put an exact number on), I have said to myself, “my life is a series of losses.” It is all I have been focusing on. My losses. My life has been one loss after another. Whether it is a loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, the loss of money, or a number of other things; my life is a series of losses. However, I am not the only one who is alive on this planet. So many others feel the same way as I do. So many others have it worse off than I do. Our eyes are sometimes open only to our pain and closed to the pain other people go through. We get lost in our own pain all too often. We forget what matters. We give up. Once we start shifting our focus to others and helping others, our own lives improve as well. Not only do we make someone else feel better, but we feel better for helping someone else. I will slip and lose my focus from time to time, but before my life ends, I am hoping to help other people see things in a more positive light. After all, isn’t that what we were put on this planet for?

I Believe

I believe in God.

I believe in Heaven & Hell.

I believe our souls live on after we die.

I believe there are more than just angels watching over me.

I believe in second chances, but I also believe in starting over.

I believe love is stronger than hate.

I believe there are more good people than bad people.

I believe family and friends are most important.

I believe in helping others.

I believe, deep down, that everything will be okay even though I worry too much.

I believe in doing whatever makes you happy unless it hurts yourself or someone else.

I believe our pets are on this Earth to help us more than we are here to help them.

I believe we are all connected in some way.

I believe we are never alone.

I believe no one besides God is perfect and no one ever will be.

I believe money does not buy happiness.

I believe we are put on this Earth for a reason.

I believe everything happens for a reason.

I believe we will never learn some of those reasons until we go home to God.

I believe in good over evil.

What do you believe in?

Things I Would Tell My Younger Self

I have spent most of my life worrying and over thinking so many different things that have gone on in my life. I am 35 years old, will be 36 in a few months, and something occurred to me a couple nights ago when I could not sleep. I started to think of things that I would tell my younger self in hopes of my older self to live a better life. It is never too late to better your life. Some people use age as an excuse to not do things. It is never too late to try something different, to think differently, and to improve your life. If you start doing something positive today, it will better your life right away. So here is a list of some things I would tell my younger self in hopes that my younger self would listen so the rest of her life will be better.

1. Stop worrying so much! Worrying is pointless and it drains your energy.

2. Who cares what other people think of you. It only matters what you think of you.

3. Enjoy the moment. Don’t concentrate so much on the past or the future. What will be, will be.

4. A positive attitude can go a long way. Whether you think you can or can not, you are right.

5. Don’t judge others. You don’t know what other people are going through.

6. Pick out the positive in each situation. Don’t dwell on the negative.

7. Learn to let things go. Life doesn’t always go as planned, so let the “not so pleasant things in life” go.

8. Money is important, but not that important.

9. Having a few close friends is better than having no friends at all.

10. Don’t take things for granted.

11. You don’t have to forget, but learn to forgive.

12. Try something new. Get out of your comfort zone and do new things.

13. Exercise and eating right is important, but when you want pizza or a burger, eat it!

14. Accept yourself as you are. God made you for a reason, so don’t change who you are.

15. Family is most important.

Those are just a few things that I have learned over my 35 years of life on this planet. I am sure I could come up with many more, but those are the most important, in no particular order. One never stops learning. Your life keeps evolving. Most people don’t like change, but learn from the changes to improve your life. Life is hard sometimes, but life is worth it.

What Is Stopping You From Living?

Money. The cause of so much stress in one person’s life and happiness in another person’s life. It makes some people go crazy to the point where they obsess over how to make more. Some good ideas and some bad ideas. We are all trying to obtain money. We need it to live, to pay bills, to buy groceries, etc…  There are certain individuals who have too much of it and don’t know what to do with it and lose it all. Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone had enough money to the point where there was no poverty and everyone was comfortable with their own income? If you could do anything in this world you wanted and money was not an issue, what would you do?

Would you travel the world?

Would you live in a castle?

Would you create the most beautiful garden?

Would you buy an island?

Or would you do none of those things? Maybe you would create your own business or charity. Maybe you would give to other people more. Maybe you would go after the career you really wanted. Maybe you would drop your career all together! Maybe you would write a book. Whatever you would do if money was not an option, why not go for it now? Sure I do understand that buying an island and living in a castle is a little out of reach for most people, but the point is to go for your dream. Don’t let any excuse stop you. I always use money as an excuse to not do something. I can’t travel much because I don’t have the money to do so. I can’t go after my dream career of being a writer because we need money coming in. A good friend of mine tells me to write my goals down (with money not being a reason to not do something) and your goals will eventually be accomplished. Well, guess what? My husband and I took not only one, but two vacations this past summer. Did we have the money to do so? Yes and no. We just did it. Life is too short to not do what you want. What am I doing now? Working towards my dream career of being a writer. I am just doing it. I am trying not to worry about the money issue. I am just working towards my goal and that is enough. So whatever you are putting off today because of money or any other excuse, stop putting it off and go for it! If you don’t go for it now, you never will.

According to my dictionary app, success is defined as “the accomplishments of one’s goals,” and “the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like”.  What is success to you? Success to me is going for your dreams whether you fail or not. Trying is succeeding. Does failure really happen or do we stop trying and give up? Success does not have to mean power and money. Success is doing something you have always wanted to do. It is taking a leap, a chance, and having faith it will work out.

I believe we are all successful at something. Even if we don’t think we have found our way in life, you are reaching towards your goals whether you feel like you are or not. Everyone has been knocked down, dragged in the mud, and stepped on.  It is what we do next that defines success. Do we stay down and give up? Or do we get back on our feet again and keep trying? I have been known to stay down for a while, but I always get back up. I don’t give up. I keep trying. Maybe I wallow in self pity for too long, but I always jump over that hurdle and keep going.

Whether it is a student who failed a test or is failing a class, an employee who lost their job, someone being diagnosed with a terminal disease, or someone who is struggling to lose weight. Whatever issue you are dealing with it is important and you can reach your goal & be successful. Setting small goals may help you along the way. Finding inspiration is a positive step in the right direction. Meeting people who can help you reach your goals is a huge benefit.

The bottom line is what countless people have said along the way, don’t give up. I’ve heard it over and over again, but I am not sure I really believed in it until now. I’m not really sure I believed in myself until now. Don’t let it take 35 years for you to believe in success. Believe in it now.
